Frequently Asked
Questions

How often do propane cylinders need to be recertified?
DOT requires propane cylinders to be requalified 12 years from manufacture, then every 5 or 10 years after, depending on the requalification method. We can check the date stamp when you bring the cylinder in.
Can I exchange any brand of propane cylinder?
We accept most standard 20 lb, 30 lb, and 33 lb OPD-equipped cylinders for exchange. Damaged, expired (over 12 years from manufacture date), or non-OPD cylinders may not qualify.
Is tank exchange or refill cheaper?
Refill is usually cheaper because you only pay for the propane that fits - exchange providers typically fill cylinders to about 15 lbs even though the cylinder holds 20 lbs. Otte offers both so you can pick what works.
What is propane tank exchange?
Propane tank exchange is a service where you swap an empty cylinder for a pre-filled cylinder, paying for the propane and the convenience. Otte Oil & Propane runs tank exchange at our Lincoln, NE and Davey, NE locations.
